In this unit, students will examine the experiences and struggles of American immigrants in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The influx of millions of immigrants to the United States during
this period greatly affected U.S. policies and national culture. The skills of note-taking,
journaling, and following directions are integrated into activities throughout the unit. A variety of assessments includes students creating a thematic map, responding to non-fiction text, analyzing and memorizing poetry, and completing graphic organizers.
