This imposter recognition and fix-up strategy reinforces the application of visual, semantic, and meaning clues to monitor reading and comprehension. For this strategy activity, an imposter word is implanted in the sentences and readers must find this word and fix-it-up! Students are encouraged to cross-check their understanding using the Big Three questions:

Does it look right?
Does it sound right?
Does it make sense?

This strategy is perfect for students who read without attention to meaning, as well as students who plug in visually similar words and don't match the letters with their sounds. With practice, students can be trained to effectively apply multiple cueing systems to cross-check for accuracy and meaning.
