This unit was created to serve as a science-based, literature-rich unit for first grade students. Though this was designed with first graders in mind, it is easily adaptable to second and third grade students, who will be able to work more independently on the same projects.
The book: Diary of a Worm, a fictional story by Doreen Cronin, serves as a jumping off point for this unit, which also includes a variety of nonfiction books.
English Language Arts activities, which help to meet Common Core Standards, related to and based on Diary of a Worm, by Doreen Cronin include:
Compare and contrast fictional and non-fictional stories using a Venn Diagram, Worm's Red Cap a story sequence activity, Wormy comprehension cards, comprehension questions for Diary of a Worm, Fact VS. Fiction T-Chart graphic organizer for use with Diary of a Worm to separate fact from fiction, Thinking map Worm Circle Map, Thinking map Worm Brace Map, Thinking map Worm Tree Map, Worm themed writing paper.
Science activities which are based on the non-fiction worm books listed in literature resources include: Worm habitat set-up guide, Worm Learning Journal.
And for fun, a reader's theater play/song!

I used this unit with our meal worm study, did comparisons and contrast and some of the resources I was able to tailor to meal worms. Great addition to our science unit!

You may want to consider adding a video portion to this unit. The Curious George episode "George Digs Worms" from the PBS DVD Curious George Goes Green! (available at Target for $5) fits this unit well. It has an additional science experiment tie in as well. Just a thought. Thank you so much for all the hard work you did! Virginia
