This anticipatory guide is a great way to begin. Prior to reading to reading In the Year of the Boar and Jackie Robinson, this allows you to get students' opinions of some concepts which are very pertinent to the novel. After reading, they can write whether or not some of their opinions have changed.
It's a great novel to read at any time of the year. World Series time would be great as well as the Chinese New Year and African American History month.

I have taught for 36 years at the 3rd, 5th, and 6th grade levels. Fifth grade is my first love. I teach all major subject areas.
