In the novel In the Year of the Boar and Jackie Robinson, the main character (Shirley) moves from China to New York City. She has difficulty adjusting to the new landscape and culture. Her first culture shock was the apartment in New York City. Using this web organizer, students must describe Shirley's apartment in New York City and then write a description of it.
It's a great novel to read at any time of the year. World Series time would be great as well as the Chinese New Year and African American History month.

I have taught for 36 years at the 3rd, 5th, and 6th grade levels. Fifth grade is my first love. I teach all major subject areas.
