I found that when working with 11th and 12th grade students, daily independent reading in class was not necessary or particulary helpful at times. Students had already incorporated reading into their daily lives at home. So, I gave them a 150 page minimum per marking period (six weeks) and an alternative way of journaling their reading rather than writing daily.
