Seller's Description
Selecting a Just Right Book, creating a collection of book summaries, interacting and making connections with independent reading novels, meeting daily reading expectations, reading for fun, making D.E.A.R. meaningful (Drop Everything and Read), rubric for grading independent reading practice, student rating system.
Through this independent reading program, students are taught to select a "Just Right Book" using the 5 finger rule. They create a "Book Hook" which is a collection of their book summaries that can be displayed and hung on a binder clip in the classroom. Students are introduced to different themes throughout the year as they complete their book summaries. Book summaries, or "Book Hooks" encourage students to interact meaningfully upon completion of each independent reading novel by commenting on the following themes:
1) perspective
2) empathy
3) personal connection
4) critical thinking
5) "New Worlds"
6) Growth and change
A completed book hook should be edited and proofread. Once the teacher has checked off the book hook, it can be added to the student's book hook collection hanging in the room. During the first week of school, students create an artistic cover using heavy card stock for their books hooks displaying their name and 4 of their favorite things (one on each corner). Also included is a rubric for grading book hooks and daily independent reading practice.
