Teaching inferencing to primary students can be very difficult! This activity packet will help :)

By investigating "Snow Day Case Files" students will sort through evidence to determine what the main characters in a mini-story did during a snow day. As "Inference Investigators," students are encouraged to make inferences based on the clues in the evidence. This printable includes a 4-page, detailed lesson plan (with pictures) to allow you to successfully accomplish this activity with your students.

In addition to the lesson plan, you will find activity resources, a graphic organizer, recording sheets AND as a little bonus, several great *posters* for teaching inferencing.

Hello.
I love the whole lesson plan and the support tasks/activities. However, I didn't see the whole story typed out; "A Snow Day Story." Was there actually a story to use with this plan?

Thank you,

"A Snow Day Story" is the prompt you read to the students to kick off the activity. The story is left incomplete so the students can infer what they did during their snow day :)

Hi Abby, I'm thinking about using a bit of this in my observation lesson in a few weeks. What common core ELA first grade goals would you link this to? I know it covers "asks and answer key details in a text" and that goal grows to include inferencing explicitly written in the goal in the intermediate grades. I guess since I'm not using a text really I wanted to get your opinion - I realize it gives inferencing practice so that they can gain more meaning in reading. It can also be linked to the speaking and listening goals. I just want to make sure it's clear to my principal - we as teachers know how important this is for the children to develop but I want to make sure the link is explicit. Does that make sense? Thanks so much!

It sounds like you are spot on! I would probably link to CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.1.1 {Ask and answer questions about key details in a text.} and maybe CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.1.3 {Describe characters, settings, and major events in a story, using key details.}. You're correct in that it is a building block for what students will do in later grades. It was created prior to the roll out of the CCSS, so it doesn't align exactly, but I think you are on target with your thinking! I would tell your principal that you looked ahead to future standards in order to decide how this lesson would appropriately fit into your curriculum :)

The most common cause of this error is mistakenly opening and printing from "preview" in Adobe. Here's what typically works for most customers:

This is easy to fix, so no worries! If you are a Mac user, you need Adobe Acrobat Reader X. If doing that doesn't work, try these options: - If you're a Mac user, switch browsers (i.e. if you're currently opening in Firefox, try opening in Internet Explorer or Safari) - Make sure you check Adobe under "open with" to verify that that Adobe is the program you're using to open the document and not "preview" - Try opening the document from an entirely different computer (open directly from TpT) Please let me know if any of these option help and, if they don't, you'll have to contact TpT for a refund (sellers don't handle anything money-related). Let me know if there's anything else I can do on my end to make this right! Thanks again for your purchase and have a great day!

Hi Abby! I just wanted to let you know that I did the Inference Investigators with my third graders and it was AMAZING! It has been in the 90's in KS this week, so I felt like we needed to get in the mood for this activity. I told students that on Thursday we would be having a WINTRY DAY and they should bring gloves, hats, etc. I had hot chocholate in the crock-pot cooking all day. We had Christmas music playing. We made "snow" angles in the carpet, we built snowmen. AND then we dived into Tim's Snowy Day! It was AMAZING! The inferences that came out were just wonderful! My favorite was "Miss Z I think Tim did his chores at 1:30pm, because he didn't get them all done. I think he didn't see the list until then and hurried until he had to met Kate at the park." OH MY GOODNESS! As the students were sharing evidence it was PRICELESS! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!

I want to purchase your Inferencing Investigations pack but had a question. I live in South Florida and my students have never experienced snow. Are the activities all based around snow and will snow need to be a part of their schema to "get it"?
March 17, 2012 Report inappropriate comment

Babbling Abby  (TpT Seller)
The activity is more about inferring what may have been done on a snow day, than snow specifically. Some of the activities discuss snow (i.e. going sled-riding). I have a non-snow oriented inferencing activity in the works (similar to this one), but I'm not sure when I'll have it completed. Have a great day!

Hi Abby,
I recently purchased your Inferencing Investigation. As I was printing the document, I noticed a small typo. On page 2 Inference Investigators, The Snow Day Story title is at the bottom of the page and not on the story page. Is there anyway you can fix this. I am looking forward to using this with my students next week. Thanks for sharing your talents and hard worK.

Hi,

Your unit looks really cute, as do all of the things you make. I just purchased it, and had a couple questions. On "Tim's Snow Day" page, it reads, "Write a story about what something that happened to Tim and Grandmas Sue during their snow day together." It seems like there are some typos in that, or am I just reading it wrong?

Also, how do you have the kids make a timeline with exact times (I get that they would be inferred times) but how can they infer the times based on the clues, such as Candyland at 2:00. What would give them the clue about the game being played at 2:00. Just don't know how I would get kids to figure that out.

Thanks so much!

Yes, that is absolutely a typo! If you'd like an updated copy, please send me an email at babblingabby(at)gmail(dot)com and I'll send you an alternative.

And, yes, all the times are just general estimates. You may put times on other things and the only time Candyland, for instance would fit, would be 2pm. It's really a very customizable lesson that you can tweak to fit your needs. Plus, having kids justify why they think the time would be suitable is a great way to stretch their thinking and make them defend their answers.

I hope that helps!
