Reading Between the Lines with Chris Van Allsburg is a language arts unit plan created to focus on the reading strategy of inferring. In this 110 page PDF, there are 25 lesson plans, including detailed plans, graphic organizers, handouts, and rubrics for each activity.
Seven of Chris Van Allsburg's works are studied during this unit: The Wretched Stone, The Garden of Abdul Gazasi, The Stranger, The Mysteries of Harris Burdick, Just a Dream, The Polar Express, and The Sweetest Fig. The unit spans 5 weeks, allowing for 40 minutes daily. Some of the activities are repeated with each book, allowing for teacher modelling, student practice, and performance tasks. For the culminating task, students read a text they are unfamiliar with (The Sweetest Fig) and are asked to answer 5 inference questions (rubric also included).

I just have one copy of each book - I either project it under the document camera, or collect the kids around me as I read (I also reread each book about three times during the week it is studied). My kids are grade 5/6 and it works well for them. If your students are younger, or have higher needs, you might want to consider a few copies so they could work in small groups.

Do you have a unit plan similar to this one? I just finished this unit and my students loved it and I really enjoyed teaching the lessons (especially with the rubrics as part of the package. I love your Van Allsburg but I can not do it in my third grade class as the fourth grade teacher does this unit. Do you plan on developing any more author studies that might work for third-fifth? I teach a high level third grade group. Thanks!

I'm not sure what grade you teach, (and I'm from Ontario so I would have to look up the common core standards), but this unit focuses mainly on the comprehension strategy of inferring and has a heavy focus on reading responses. There are many writing skills covered such as journal and narrative writing, as well.

I purchased the Reading Comprehension Strategies binder. All of the skills are introduced with a poster that has a light orange background and darker orange stripes around the outside except for the summarizing skill. Any chance you could add that? I am a big fan of visual consistency in my room :-) BTW I love all of your materials that I have purchased.

I'm sorry, this unit does not contain possible answers, as most of the questions are open-response, reader response, and writing activities - the answers would vary too much to be able to provide a key. Assessment rubrics are provided for all the activities, though.
