This is a packed, interactive, explicit instruction unit actively engaging students in the exploration of six tier 2 words designed to be used after reading "Stellaluna." In my fifth grade classroom, I use these shorter read alouds to introduce more complex topics like theme and comparing across texts, while developing vocabulary background. The kids absolutely love these lessons and our focus words become part of our everyday classroom language. Most lessons only take about 30 minutes and move quickly!
Included in this 41 slide set:
(all slides have suggested script for lesson- see screenshot in thumbnails to the right)
Day 1: Brief story summary in the form of a cooperative review, 3 words with three slides each that define, provide examples, and then engage students in at least 3 interactive and cooperative activities, quick review, and exit slip
Day 2: Brief character analysis cooperative review, 3 words with three slides each that define, provide examples, and engage students in at least 3 interactive and cooperative activities, quick review, and exit slip
Day 3: Cumulative review of all 6 words in three interactive activities including a Find Someone Who cooperative review.
Assessments: 6 word review & 2 extended response questions analyzing theme and plot/cause effect
Extras: Sentence strips, vocabulary cards for students to display during interactive lesson
Each slide includes suggested script for instructional use. Download and your ready to go! Before you know it, your kids will be word wizards!
All printables have been flattened. Save the whole presentation as a PDF and you can print the desired pages.
***The preview provides only two examples of two of the words. There are many other slides included in download.

Great unit! My students were very engaged and right away began finding the words in their reading. We also added the words to our CAFE Word Collector chart. I did find it confusing that I couldn't print some of the slides and I had to change it to a PDF but it wasn't too challenging. :-) I will be downloading the Crickwing unit next! Keep them coming!
Thank you so much! You made my day to hear your success! I have been printing straight from the PP at school without doing the PDF conversion and they are printing just fine....have you tried? I know I put instructions to convert- I was still learning the ropes. Thanks again!
Wonderful! We are just completing our fifth word study and the kids are still using the words we first introduced...they really seem to attach to the words! Glad you guys enjoyed it!

This was a great packet - I loved the sentences to be matched with the vocabulary. I shrank the definition cards down and they could be used more easily for reference.
Funny you said that last sentence! I just started doing that and posting with our daily word use poster! I am going to include in future packets! Thanks and so glad you enjoyed!
:0) Soooo glad to hear you will have a great use for it! My kids have become vocabulary addicts and are now making word lists for me from the books I read out loud! Best wishes!
