Suggestions are provided for a five day routine. I use a list each week for the whole school year. With consistent reinforcement, your students will LOVE words and become vocabulary wizards!
These lessons are great for reinforcing use of context clues, multisyllabic word decoding, and reading fluency. Rather than using verbal cues, I have created written clues for students to decipher in small groups while I work with another small group.
The PREMATURELY list can be used to reinforce:
*prefix pre-
*suffix -ly and -er
*homophones
Included are fifteen pages:
Page 1-4: Detailed plan for a 5-day implementation including suggested oral quiz and sort
Page 5: Typed clues for students to work on in small groups, guided groups, or independent learning centers.
Page 6: 2 Word lists for quicker copying
Page 7: Letter grid to make letters for students to manipulate.
Page 8: Three questions assessing multiple meaning words, context clues, and word origins.
Page 9-15: Cooperative Learning game cards and instructions
How I use in the classroom:
I had my students in small groups based on student need. On day 1, groups worked together to read the clues and manipulate the letters to form their first best guess. My coteacher and I each had a small group that needed additional help.
On day 2, we would echo read the list together several times while focusing on several of the more difficult words. Students then received the numbered list to check their Day 1 responses.
On day 3, we would chorally read the list, conduct a mini lesson on one or two word families and have students do a word sort in spelling notebooks.
On day 4, whole group review of word families and cooperative learning review activity.
On day 5, students take test which is only 8 of the most difficult words, 2 new words reinforcing the minilesson, and #11- the "big word."
There will be 36+ lessons for you to choose from depending on the needs of your students.
