Inserting symbols using the Alt key
Symbols can be entered by holding down the Alt key and entering the number of the symbol.
Hold down the Alt key, enter the four digit number for the symbol, and then release Alt key.
Use the number pad to enter numbers.
These numbers work in all programs on Windows based computers.
Table of Alt Numbers: Click in the cell next to the number and find out what each group reveals.

I am holding down Alt while keying the numbers, but nothing is happening! Am I missing a step?

Check two things, press alt and the number and then release it and it will appear. Check to make sure the number lock is set correctly. If neither of these work, try another key board. I just tried them again and they all work as instructed.
