In this lesson, students are introduced to what makes good poetry by watching a clip from the movie, The Dead Poet's Society. Through use of the discussion, kids will begin working on a series of poems called a "Poetry Journal." You can purchase the poetry journal through this site! Very effective in motivating kids, especially reluctant boys, that poetry isn't so bad.

I have purchased the poetry journal (both parts) and plan to use it very soon. I am unable to find the exact video clip. Is it possible for the seller to tell me exactly where in the movie Dead Poet's Society the quote about poetry being an expression of the human soul is located? I would really appreciate a response soon.

Hi Sallyjean,
It's found at the end of the scene where Mr. Keating, played by Robin Williams, has the boys rip out the pages of the poetry book. It is early in the movie, and I believe it is the 2nd time that the boys enter Keatings' class. Here's a youtube link of the scene: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tmayC2AdkNw

Hopefully you'll have success with the project. I always get some great poems!

I began teaching in 2005 and have quickly learned that quality does not always go hand in hand with experience. I feel that I have developed a core set of very effective lessons and projects, and the quality that my students produce proves this.
