The why and what of the Common Core is presented in this brief document. This document was created to share as an introduction to the Common Core. It is comprised of a summary answering questions about the biggest change in the history of education. I spent 4 days attending Countdown to Common Core in Orlando, Florida, and this document is a result of that training. It contains the following:
Summary of the Why, Who, What, When of the Common Core
What is not covered by the standards
What about Science and Social Studies
Implementation guidelines (for the state of Florida)
Transition to the Common Core (based on Florida)
The promise of the Standards by Stu Greenburg
The ELA (English Language Arts) instructional shifts
ELA guiding principles
Priorities of Math grades K-8
Key Fluencies in Math K-8
The PARCC (Partnership of Readiness for College and Careers) Assessment
Additional resources- which direct you to some great work in other states such as New York and North Carolina
My hope in sharing this document is that more educators become aware of this major change in education and are better able to understand what this means for us and for our students. This document was originally created by utilizing my training and training materials from the Florida Department of Education. A group of educators and administrators collaborated in the completion of this document. We hope that this helps in our presentation of the Common Core and or your understanding.
An introduction movie trailer will be coming soon! This may be used as a sneak peak to The Common Core.
This is an exciting time in education. May we all embrace the challenges ahead.
