I use this lesson to inform students about the genre of non-fiction before beginning a non-fiction unit. This lesson plan includes a hands-on activity as well as a chart that outlines the different types, modes, and purposes of non-fiction; samples of non-fiction for students to analyze (although any word work); and a brief quiz to assess their understanding.
