A best seller!! A great way to incorporate 21st Century Skills! Easily adaptable to many topics, this is a four day activity in which students apply what they may have already learned about Chinese (or any other civilization) Inventions (i.e., compasses, boat construction, paddlewheel boats, canal locks, improved bridges, gunpowder, flamethrowers, catapults, grenades, rocket technology, playing cards, money, mechanical clocks, fighting infectious diseases, disinfectants, steaming, inoculations etc...) by creating an Animoto (animoto.com) or Voki (voki.com) "commercial". The activity does require access to computers and some prior knowledge of the inventions. This assignment could easily be minorly changed to accommodate the inventions of any early civilization or even the Industrial Revolution!
Students will work in small groups, using 21st Century skills to make 30-60 second infomercials on their assigned product.
This product includes my rough lesson plan (for you to see my thought process and benchmarks to which I applied the activity) as well as the complete student handout, "notes to the teacher, individual rubric, and group rubric. The final page also includes a link to one student example from this project.
This product does not include specific instructions on working with animoto.com or voki.com. However, both are free internet sites and are pretty user friendly. My students had no trouble learning as they went.
