The Israeli-Palestinian Conflict Cartoon is a worksheet that requires analytical thinking, yet looks simple and students love it. It asks students to create their own list of events leading up to (1) Israel's independence in 1948; (2) the conflicts between Israel and its neighbor nations from 1948 to 1993; and (3) Palestine's path to independence since 1993. You can condense the activity into one graphic short story if you wish. In the first worksheet, students illustrate how events like the Holocaust, decisions like the Balfour Declaration and the White Paper, and the United Nations plan for Jewish and Arab states, and the British pullout contributed to Israeli independence. The second cartoon can include the Six Day War, the Yom Kippur War, the Munich Olympics incident, Israeli airstrikes on PLO bases in Lebanon, etc. The third cartoon will include the Israeli government�s decision to give land to Palestinians for self-rule in 1993, the turnover of Jericho, Gaza, and parts of the West Bank in 1994, Rabin�s assassination, the formation of a Palestinian government, and the current state of affairs between the two.
The very act of choosing the events and illustrating them forces students to think about how the events connect together. Students who are artists or kinesthetic learners really enjoy this activity.
