Need a mini-lesson to teach the rule of the silent "e" that helps children remember and apply it to other words? Kathy Griffin uses a familiar childrens' song and changes it to teach what readers do when they come to a word with an "e" at the end. This multimedia file will transition children over from reading C-V-C words to implementing the phonics rule "silent e" and help build the number of words they can read.
This is a .mov file that can be opened with Quick Time on your computer. You no longer have to worry about syncing a power point with the song and setting the timing. It is ready to use on your students computers or interactive whiteboard. You can use it with your Smart Board and pause during the slides to highlight words, letters, or strategies. It should be in your purchases. Look under your purchases when you login in. You can download it again from any computer. It's usually shows the picture, asks you to review (flashes) then right below that you can download it. If that doesn't work send a request ticket to TpT and they will fix it for you. I buy hand pointers to use during this song. I have my children line up holding the cards from the I've Been Working on My Silent e Game/Activity Pack and act out the song. The "e" at the end holds the pointer and reaches over the consonant and reminds the vowel to say its name. Have fun! Thanks for visiting my store and for leaving feedback.

Thank you so much for leaving feedback on your purchases. It really helps others when they are making decisions on what to purchase. The "silent e" can be difficult for the Kindergarten students. It's like they get it - learn the 2 vowels together rule - and then have a hard time transferring back. At the end is the Teaching Points page. I add the letter "s" and "ed" to some of the words when appropriate to help them read those words.

I tell them I am going to trick them by adding word endings to the word like "s" and "d." Some of my students get stuck when "hope" becomes "hoped" or "smile" becomes "smiles." I found your Smartboard song just in time to focus on silent e and the kids really love it. Of course it is kindergarten and some still put e's on everything! I think they really just need more practice with vowel sounds!

I am so glad you are enjoying them and so are your students. I like that they are so easy to manage. I have them saved to a folder and my students are able to open and close the files and use as an independent literacy station. I turn off the volume during literacy stations and turn it back on for whole group learning. Once again, my student are humming a new tune long after we have left our literacy block. They absolutely love your catchy songs and cute graphics. I only wish for some of the longer verses, there was a "bouncing ball" or that the words were highlighted as they were sung. This would help my struggling readers connect the sound to the print. But please know that this does not take away the incredible value of the work. Thank you once again for sharing.

Thank you for the suggestion. I love the feedback. I am actually working on doing that but it will most likely be this summer before I can get to it, as I am in the classroom teaching. I tried to break the words into smaller segments to help, but the bouncing ball or highlighted words would be great. If I can get it accomplished you will receive a notice that I updated the file. But once again, I am looking at the summer. For now, since you have the book version, I break each line into parts and we circle the words that we know to help match our words to the print. Also you can put a dot for each syllable under the words to help with tracking. So "working" would have 2 dots under it. Hope that makes sense:)

We love our Smart Board too! Thank you for giving feedback! After your children get used to the song and the teaching points page, add more silent e words and give them a stand up spelling bee. My first graders are loving it right now. Also, if they can find a word in the room with a silent e, they can write it down in their word work book, and I will give them a stand up and spell test on those words. Since they found the words (I make sure that there are mini-word walls for silent e words), they are more important to them. Have fun!
