This twelve slide illustration of 20's Jazz Speak is a great hook for the Twenties Unit. The backgrounds are gorgeous.
In each frame a typical Twenties Jazz Speak dialog is given and students are asked to interpret.
This is a fun way to intro the the unit. Laughter is always a good hook.
The final frame instructs students to write a message of at least 250 words in Jazz Speak, then to provide the Standard English translation, and finally, the translation in their own slang. (In my high school with a high NES, LEP, and ESL population, this activity is often challenging for those students, but their English teachers will thank you.)
Because Jazz Speak can be a little racy, I instruct students to follow their family values and nothing racier than PG-13 for me.
