A fun game to help your students practice their fluency with adding and subtracting by 1s, 10s, and 100s. This is a great way to review and reinforce place value and skip counting. Included is an instruction sheet and answer key. Jumping Puddles can be played by the whole class or students with similar skill levels can play against each other.

This game can be modified for struggling students by using a two digit number or you can use a four digit number for a little extra challenge. Have fun!

I like the idea of your game, it seems a fun way for my lower functioning students to review. How do you come up with a beginning number or is it just any number one would choose? Thank you

Hello!
You can choose any number. You can make the activity more challenging by choosing a number close to an even hundred (like 195 or 690) because this seems to be more difficult for students to negotiate adding and subtracting 5 and 10. For struggling students you can always stick to 2-digit numbers. Whatever number you begin with, just add 17 for the final result. Enjoy!

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

Grades Taught:

I am Penny - a third grade teacher in Washington State, a mom to three teenagers (Yikes!) and a wife to a very clever man. My heart lies in teaching math to 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders. I believe passionately that an excellent math education will open many doors for my students in the future. I have been teaching for 10 years and in 2008 earned my National Board Certification. Although, on occasion, I work with adults on committees at the state level, my heart lies in the elementary classroom with my students.
