Junior High/Middle School is a time when students have tons of things on their minds, the least of which is the plethora of grammatical concepts they should have learned during the elementary years. That said, the junior high/middle school ELA classroom MUST be a place where various grammatical concepts find review, and are elaborated on. I have combined the major concepts that should be covered in the junior high ELA classroom (intended for use anywhere between grades 4-9).
Each concept has an information page, complete with examples that are explained. Then, each concept has a classwork and/or homework sheet (some have answer keys as well). A very important feature is the abbreviation system I devised for each grammatical rule. For example, the four spelling rules on the information page have the following key: SR#1, SR#2, SR#3, SR#4. Then, on the homework sheet, the rule is listed for each spelling word. Students then know which rule to turn to if they are having trouble. I use this system for ALL grammatical concepts to make it easier for students to refer back to the rules. Additionally, I correct their writing assignments by using the abbreviations for the rules. For example, let's say an essay has a run-on. I would circle the run-on and then write "RO#2" next to the circled portion. Then, the student is expected to review run-on strategy #2 on the information page in order to correct the run-on. This allows students to take ownership of their own learning, and learn from their own mistakes in the process.
Here is a list of concepts included in the 41 pages (word documents) that comprises this bundle: Spelling Rules, Pluralization Spelling Rules, Homophones & Problems Words, Fragments & Run-Ons, Sentence Combining, Capitalization, Apostrophes, Quotation Marks, Using Titles, Subject-Verb Agreement, Parallel Structure, Comma Usage, Double Negatives, Parts of a Sentence (Subject & Predicate). Basically, this is a mini textbook (or workbook) for any junior high ELA teacher. What's even better, it's all in the form of word documents, so you can modify what you want and/or add what you want. Enjoy!
