This is a 450 slide PowerPoint presentation about the dangers associated with eating a diet of primarily junk food, explores the world of fast food, childhood obesity dangers, eating disorders and much more. This PowerPoint includes several video links, discussion questions, challenge questions and answers, built-in quiz, homework sheet, lesson notes, answer keys, and much more.

This PowerPoint begins by giving each student a Twinkie and asking the students to sketch the Twinkie using color into their journal / notebook. Students are then asked in a slide to record information all around the Twinkie. The more information = a better grade. After some fun information about the history associated, and origins of the Twinkie, the ingredients of a Twinkie are broken down one at a time. Special focus is put into food preservatives / additives, hydrogenation, emulsifiers, serving size, artificial colors, and flavors. A neat lab activity has teacher prepare Jell-O squares the night before. Teacher also prepares pineapple juice. One pineapple juice should be made from real pineapples, and the other needs to be made using canned pineapples. Student then use eye droppers and add drops from each type of pineapple juice on different Jell-O squares. They will find that the canned pineapple juice does very little to the Jell-O. The fresh pineapple juice contains an enzymes that breaks apart the collagen in the Jell-O. This activity shows how many fresh foods have helpful digestive enzymes over processed foods. Directions, visuals, and follow-up questions are all provided in the slideshow. Calories are addressed and a link to a calorie intake program is also included. A hidden box game also has students guess the picture beneath some boxes where each slide removes pieces blocking the image. Students take guesses as to the picture beneath. At the end of the lesson, students have a whole list of why junk is not good for your body. They then have the option to eat the Twinkie, or to throw it away. A question at the end asks the students to record why they made the decision they did? It is usually a mixed bag of eaters vs. tossers - Regardless, the kids leave the room at the end of class talking all about it. This is a neat PowerPoint. It jumps around to many different products and issues associated with junk food but having the Twinkie staring you in the face makes it all the more real. This PowerPoint then describes some health effects with childhood obesity. A link to a video is provided. Notes occur in a step by step process with visuals that describes the dangers of obesity. Factors that control obesity are then described and some thought questions emerge. The focus turns to the Fast Food Industry and why fast food sell is addressed in a step by step process. A couple of neat McDonalds value meal questions are addressed. A really neat quiz has the students guess the names of 20 people. The first ten are famous people throughout history that will puzzle the students. The last ten are fast food and junk food icons which all the students get. This moves discussion into the power of advertising. What students can do to help manage their weight is addressed. A series of challenge questions review the weight management plan in multiple choice form. Students find the incorrect part of the plan. Easting disorders are then presented. Anorexia and its dangers are presented in a step by step process. Bulima nervosa is describe and the dangers associated with this disorder. A link to a video that describes the portrayal of women in the media is presented. Please view before showing your students. The dangers of anabolic steroids is provided. A few hidden box games conclude this PowerPoint that has the students guess a relevant picture beneath some shapes. Each slide removes more of the blocking shapes and students guess the picture beneath. Thanks for your interest in this PowerPoint.
