This product is designed to introduce students to the process of writing a research paper or expository composition. Students will write a report on an African animal using the included research cards or their own research. It works very well to incorporate science topics including animal adaptations and habitats into the language arts curriculum. This product contains 59 pages of materials including:

* 10 Animal Fact Cards: A full-page fact sheet for each of the following animals is included: African elephant, giraffe, wildebeest, cheetah, lion , hippopotamus, rhinoceros, ostrich, zebra, and mountain gorilla. Each fact card includes information about the animal's size, habitat, life span, diet, predators, family group, special features, and other facts.
* 10 blank Animal Fact Cards: One page for each of the animals listed above with space for students to write about each of the characteristics listed above.
* Tree Map graphic organizer for organizing students' research
* Lined writing paper with an animal footprint theme. Students can use the writing paper to write a report about their animal.
* Reproducible trading card for each of the 10 featured animals, including scientific name/type, protected status, and nearest relatives. Two versions of each card are included - a black and white cartoon style card and a full-color photo card for each animal. All cards measure approximately 3.75"x5".
* Fully illustrated animal name cards: 2.5" x 10.25" name cards for each animal for use in pocket charts or bulletin boards. There are 3 versions of each name card included: full-color cartoon version, black-and-white cartoon version, and full-color photograph version.
* Photo cards: a 5" x 7" photo card for each animal
* Printable vocabulary sheet
* Printable vocabulary booklet
* List of websites for further information on featured animals.
* Teacher 's Guide including how-to's and tips for using this product.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have been a special education teacher since 1998. I currently teach a self-contained cross categorical class of 3rd through 5th graders. I have also taught k-6 resource classes and self-contained classes in the past. I currently teach in North Carolina, but I taught for 4 years in Texas.
