I have designed a set of writing printables and teaching tips (to go along with the printables) for use in kindergarten and first grade classrooms that coincide with the first three Common Core Writing Standards for both kindergarten and 1st grade. I have also developed similar materials for the additional writing standards, along with a year-long pacing guide for incorporating all of the CC standards using these materials.
The first writing standard addresses writing opinion pieces focused upon book reviews. I have included two different printables for kindergarten and two for first grade along with my explanation for their use. The printables can stand alone as the final written product, or can be used as a draft to be copied elsewhere following editing and revision.
The second writing standard addresses writing informative/explanatory texts. The basic topics for texts include animals, people, places, and food. For kindergarten, I have included four planning sheets in which students identify their topic, write four different facts about their topic (with or without teacher assistance), and illustrate each fact. After the planning sheets are complete, students may transfer their work onto the final copy paper which includes a topic sentence stem and room for writing and illustrating three facts. First grade is set up similarly with four planning sheets; however, the planning sheets use mostly written words rather than illustrations. There are also four picture-cued writing framework sheets to match the planning sheets that can stand alone as a final copy or can be copied by students onto another final copy paper. The writing framework sheets are set up with sentence stems using transitions and a variety of closing sentence stems.
The third writing standard addresses writing narratives. For kindergarten, I have included three different narrative printables suitable for three different levels of writers. For first grade, I have included five different narrative printables suitable for different levels of writers as well. I came up with a writing format for first graders to help students organize their ideas using time-order words, details, and adding more information about the details. The first grade printables are full of picture-cues and sentence stems.
Please look for my other materials that address the additional writing standards in small standard-packets such as this one, along with a large bundle of all the writing standards.
These lessons do give good structure for students to follow when teaching the writing standards. I teach 1st grade. Would have liked them to be a little more primary looking.
Thank you so much! I'm glad you like it and appreciate that you'll be watching for more. I'm about to wrap up the second set and will hopefully be able to post it soon!

Just started using in my class. I look forward to using them to help my kiddos improve their writing.
I have taught over 10 years in a variety of settings - from rural to urban school districts. I currently teach ELL to students in kindergarten through fifth grade. Previously, I taught kindergarten and PreK.
