Addition strategies include counting on, doubles, facts of five, near doubles, and facts of ten. Subtraction strategies include counting up, counting back, and thinking addition.

Section 2 focuses on more advanced addition and subtraction strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and the relationship between addition and subtraction. These strategies take students beyond the basic facts and allow them to see how previously learned mental strategies can be used to compute problems with larger numbers.
