In the Lucy Calkins' Units of Study for K-2, she suggests a unit in which students study the writing craft of an author. My students LOVE Kevin Henkes, so I've created this unit, based upon some of Lucy's teaching points and many of my own, to help my students write like Mr. Henkes! This unit contains:
*20 suggested mini-lessons for a unit of approximately 4-5 weeks
*Suggested anchor chart
*List of necessary texts
*Published piece rubric
*Author celebration rubric
*Comment sheet for author celebration gallery walk

I purchased your unit and am having a great time with it. I do have a question though. You reference something throughout the unit that I am unfamiliar with: K2K. For example, on page 4 (and in your 13 teaching point) you say: "Ask students how they can use captions into thus page, and students go K2K to discuss." What does that mean?
Also, do you have any student work samples from this unit that you could share?
Thanks for your question! I apologize... K2K is how I abbreviated knee to knee, as students may do in a turn and talk. We rearranged our units and will now be teaching this unit in April. I'll be adding sample work for this unit once this year's students get going on the unit in a couple months!

Hello Angeline,
I wanted to know which Kevin Henkes books are needed for this author study. Before I buy it, I want to know if I have the books needed. Please let me know asap.
Thank You,
Jackie
Thanks for your question, Jackie! I use (and reference) the following books:
Julius, the Baby of the World
Chrysanthemum
Wemberly Worried
Lilly's Big Day
Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse
Many of the features I teach during this unit are found in MOST of the Kevin Henke's mouse books, so there are some easy substitutions if you don't have all these texts.
I am certified to teach K-8th grade. My first year of teaching, I taught science to 150 8th graders! Teaching first grade is where my heart is, and I've been fortunate enough to teach firsties for the past five years.
