Hey, y’all! This strategies packet can be used in so many different ways! It was initially designed with kindergarten RTI in mind, specifically to meet the needs of students struggling with letter-sound correspondence. Additionally, it could be used to support your reading readiness in pre-K or K, for small group letter work activities, for ESL/ELL students, or for remediation in first grade. Of course, please use it to best meet the needs of your students!
Common Core Standard addressed:
ELA-Literacy.RF.K.3a
Demonstrate basic knowledge of letter-sound correspondences by producing the primary or most frequent sound for each consonant.
Each activity provides students an opportunity to reinforce these reading readiness skills. I’ve also provided a suggestion for organization, a sample lesson plan, and an option to help you keep data!
***Please note that this packet focuses only on beginning sounds and the sound most commonly made by the letter (as stated by the standard). Only short vowel sounds are covered.***
There are 7 activities for each letter that are described in detail (with pictures) in the pack:
1. Focus Letter Mat (vowels in red, consonants in blue, each focus mat contains the upper- and lowercase letter and 3 labeled pictures that begin with the sound)
2. Sound Warm Up (letter-sound correspondence fluency)
3. Sound Off (student generated begininng sound word list)
4. Letter Sound Pictures (6 pictures for each letter with the first letter omitted; only 4 for X)
5. Check Yourself (student self-assessment; saying picture name and identifying whether or not it begins with the focus letter)
6. Listen Up (discriminating between words that begin with the focus letter and those that don't)
7. Letter-Sound Assessment (cumulative assessment over learned skills)

I purchased the RTI letter id packet. Thinking about the sound one. But more importantly my students can't seem to remember how to form the letters. They are comfortable with uppercase. My job is to have them write their letters in lowercase. I didn't see where they needed to do that on the common core. Do you expect your students to write their letters independently after teaching them or can they refer to a chart. Would the "RTI letter sound packet" help with that. Memory issues. Thanks, Shinka

Neither pack is really designed to teach handwriting, but I would definitely expect my students to be able to write both upper and lowercase. I always have an alphabet somewhere in the room which I refer students to frequently. Often times, they have a nametag on their desks to refer to also. Using a "resource" was always encouraged :)

Hi, I just recently purchased and printed your wonderful packet. I noticed that on the Letter Sound Assessment page for the the letter y, there are no words to read that start with the letter y. The are the same words that appear for the letter w.

Hi there! I recently purchased this packet and truly love everything about it! And what I love even more is the growth I'm seeing with my kiddos! I do have a question though... I was wondering if there is away that I can change the letters in the Sound Warm-Up? We introduce the letters out of alphabetical order and the kiddos don't know all the ones on your sheets. Right now I'm having to put handwritten letters on scrap paper on top of the letters that they don't know. Any help would be great.

Anyway, the activities look fantastic, but the instructions and ways to use the packet on pages 1-13 don't have any text, just blotches across the page. Any idea on how to remedy this?

As far as the blotches go, the most common cause of this error is mistakenly opening and printing from "preview" in Adobe. Here's what typically works for most customers:
This is easy to fix, so no worries! If you are a Mac user, you need Adobe Acrobat Reader X. If doing that doesn't work, try these options: - If you're a Mac user, switch browsers (i.e. if you're currently opening in Firefox, try opening in Internet Explorer or Safari) - Make sure you check Adobe under "open with" to verify that that Adobe is the program you're using to open the document and not "preview" - Try opening the document from an entirely different computer (open directly from TpT) Please let me know if any of these option help and, if they don't, you'll have to contact TpT for a refund (sellers don't handle anything money-related). I love both your letter recognition and your letter correspondence kits but there seems to be the same or very similar pages in both packages. That wouldn't be a problem if I was only to buy one. But I'd hate to buy both and have duplicate items especially since your letter sound kit is more expensive.

I was looking through the pack and noticed the word cards for the letter Xx, the words 'fox' and 'box' you have the blank for students to fill in /f/ and /b/, instead of /x/ at the end of the word. And then the listen up for Ss both snakes are in color. These may have been done on purpose or a mistake, either way I still think all of your work is awesome!! Thank you so much for sharing!!

I am a kindergarten teacher in VA and I love your two RTi packs. When do you start using them? We just started PALs testing which is Phonologial Awareness Literacy Screening (I am not sure if you have that where you teach) and I am appauled with the lack of letter recognition and letter/sound correspondance this year. I need all the help I can get.. thank you!

We don't do PALS, but it sounds very similar to DIBELS! I would start using the resources as soon as you know the skill level of your groups. Some kids will be proficient in letter recognition, and might just need letter-sounds. Others won't know either and you'll be best to start at letter recognition.
