This is now a 500 slide PowerPoint presentation with built-in class notes (red slides) many exciting visuals and questions / answers, neat cd challenge / 50/50 quiz that uses old cd's to represent answers True False Answers, neat song activity / change the school mascot to a common Protist poster project with visuals and instructions, and hidden box game and many great links to videos. I tried to make Protists as interesting as possible for the students in this PowerPoint. Also included are lesson notes, and sheet for students to record info from student projects.
Note: One of the main purposes of this lesson is to show how the Kingdom Protista is like a Junk Drawer / Artificial Kingdom. The lesson ends describing changes in the current 5 Kingdom model. For key word search reasons, I have kept Kingdom in the Title. I've worked hard to keep this lesson current while at the same time not completely losing the attention of the students. - I hope.
Also included is a 170 bonus PowerPoint on nutrient pollution that fits nicely with this lesson.
Areas of Focus within this PowerPoint: This PowerPoint begins Describing Eukaryotic cells, and the Kingdom Protista is introduced, After a definition with images of a Protists, students are presented a series of challenges to determine which picture is a Protist. One of the pictures will have a clip art tissue of some type so obviously the other picture is the Protist. The students then get good at pointing out the Protist. Plant like Protists are covered in a series of slides with visuals and names, A link with video short about Protists on YouTube is provided. The animal-like Protists are then discussed and a special focus with animated slides shows cilia and flagella, The Fungus-like Protists are then discussed and video link is provided. Next is a really neat 50/50 challenge that uses old cd's. Students have to make educated guesses as to which picture is which Protist. The cd becomes a token, and they get to keep their token for the next question if they get it right. They try to see if they can make it through the whole challenge. Two neat activities are provided at the end. One activity has students research a Protist and create a poster / bulletin to change the current school mascot to a Protist with pictures and facts (Just for fun - Not an actual task unless it is in fact time for your mascot to go). The other option is to create a song about a Protist to sing to the class that must include Protist information. Both activities are always student favorites. This is a neat and informative PowerPoint about the difficult world of the Protist that will challenge and excite your students.
This PowerPoint includes critical notes (Red Slides), exciting visuals, challenge questions, activities with directions and more. Text is usually placed at the top of the slide so it can be read from all angles of a classroom. Color coded slides, as well as a shade technique is used to increase student focus and allows the teacher to control the pace of the lesson. These PowerPoints are meant to be interactive as possible and ask many questions, provides built in review opportunities, explains directions to activities, and much more.
