Language Arts Reading and Writing Fairy Tale Unit: Hansel and Gretel

This fairy tale unit focuses on "Hansel and Gretel." The unit includes the text of the fairy tale, a worksheet for students to record the typical elements of a fairy tale, a storyboard for student to retell and illustrate the story, a creative activity for students to capture the important themes and message, and a page for students to respond to a writing prompt. The writing page includes 30 possible writing prompts from which the teacher can choose when assigning the prompt to students. The unit can be photocopied all together or the teacher can choose only the activities that he/she would like students to complete. These are great activities for reading comprehension, dramatic presentation, creative and persuasive writing, and vocabulary building. This unit can also be left for a substitute as the students can complete the reading and activities alone or in groups. The individual activities can also be done in stations around the classroom.

I have been teaching World Language (French, Spanish, Italian) at the elementary, middle and high school levels for 16 years. I regularly present foreign language teaching methodology workshops at state, regional and national conferences and in teacher preparation programs at various universities. I have spent time volunteering in schools in impoverished areas of Nicaragua and a portion of the money earned through TPT is used to buy school supplies (pencils, paper, books) for students at the Panama School in La Concha, Nicaragua.
