This language teaching plan for idioms is designed to help you teach the Common Core Standard for 3-5 graders (Language: Vocabulary Acquisition and Use, 5.a./b.). This lesson will make these sayings and expressions understandable and appealing to your students. Included is an original song/jingle for teaching idioms, a jingle poster, 5 teaching and practice printables, five writing ideas, and Idiom ID, a quick paced game. I use catchy familiar tunes for my jingles, the kind you can’t get out of your head. It is personally gratifying to hear my little people singing or humming them throughout the day. After introducing idioms, my students begin to scour our daily oral reading for them. I have lessons on onomatopoeias, similes, and metaphors. Those lessons produce the same positive results. I use classical literature in my teaching, and our reading is rich with these literary devices.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I began teaching 3rd graders in a self contained classroom over 20+ years ago. After quite a few years, I moved up to teach middle and upper school students. My favorite subject there was drama. I am now back with my little friends in third grade, and I love everyday with them.
