Greetings Jen:
I just purchased the Lauch for 5th grade and can't wait to use it this fall! I'm wondering if you'd consider making Smartboard files for each of the charts? I may be able to do it, but since you already have the charts typed (not to mention the cute fonts), it would probably be faster for you - and make my life so much more simple:-)

Thanks
Becky

Hi Jen,
Thanks for your input. Yes...55 minutes is crazy! When I read you have a 3 hour block..wow!...what I could do with a 3 hour block daily!!! I currently do the weekly reading, weekly writing. I like your idea of maybe doing every other day (a flip flop). From week to week I tend to think students loose some of the information. Thanks for your input. I will be purchasing soon! :)

I am interested in purchasing this great packet. I am a 5th grade Lang. Arts teacher, but in a middle school setting. I get about 55 min. each day with my students with 1 extra 40 minute period on Wed. and Fri. I am not sure how your workshops would work for me. I have to cover spelling and grammar in this time frame as well. Any suggestions??? I would love to use this format and program.

On  May 26, 2013Jen Bengel answered:
Great question! If you only have 55 minutes a day to cover reading/writing/language that's crazy! One thing that might be able to work is to do a reading lesson one day and then a writing lesson the next. You could rotate them daily or do like a week of reading, then writing. I might use that extra 40 minutes each week to teach a language or spelling lesson. Then weave the skill into the reading/writing workshops. I hope that helps. Best wishes!! Jen

On  May 21, 2013,  Buyer asked:
Hi Jen,
I purchased your amazing packet, but I am not sure what to place on the supply list for next year...compositon notebook for each or perhaps a spiral notebook (1-5 subjects)?
Teachers Pay Teachers
On  May 21, 2013Jen Bengel answered:
I use a composition notebook for the writers notebook. A spiral notebook with three sections would probably work best for the readers notebook. Thanks for asking! :)

On  May 6, 2013Miranda Yonts (TpT Seller) asked:
So another question: what order do you implement your units after the launching of the readers and writers workshop?
I'm meeting with my principal at the end of the week to show the resources I have found through you and my rationale. I'm so excited!
Thanks!
Teachers Pay Teachers
On  May 6, 2013Jen Bengel answered:
Awesome! I always teach the personal narrative unit next because students have the easiest time writing about themselves! Then from their it varies. Most of the time I go into the informational unit and then opinion. Those are the biggies for covering the Common Core standards. I like to mix the poetry/figurative language unit in throughout the year. A lot of times I teach that unit of Fridays. It's a fun break from whatever unit we are working on. Good luck and let me know if you have more questions!
Jen
On  April 25, 2013Miranda Yonts (TpT Seller) asked:
I am a 5th grade ELA and Social Studies teacher. My district requires the use of a basal that is not divided into literary genres. However, I love the workshop model and desperately want to incorporate your units into my class. I do think my principal would offer me some flexibility if I can create a plan that would incorporate both. Any suggestions?
Thanks!
Teachers Pay Teachers
On  April 25, 2013Jen Bengel answered:
That's a great question! I used to teach in Alabama and had to use a basal too...I feel your pain! I too was fortunate enough to have the flexibility to teach in my own way. I would spend the minimal amount of time needed for students to understand the weekly story and then devote the rest of my time to the workshop model. We had three hours of literacy block each morning. I taught the basal for about 30 minutes of that and then used the workshop format for the rest of the time. My class outscored every other class in my grade each year. I don't say that to brag or anything, just to say that the data shows the workshop format is soooo much more effective (and fun for the kids) than teaching to one story all week.

With all that said, I think you can do it! Of course it depends on your schedule. Both workshops work the best with 1 hour for each, but they can be done in 45 minutes each. I hope that helps you. Let me know if you have any more questions as you think it through. I would LOVE to help!!

There is no change in that download. I decided to separate the unit so that I made one for each grade level. If you send me your email I would be happy to email you a copy of the third grade version. That way you will have the CCSS for third grade right with your lessons:) Thanks!

Hi,
I purchased this resource recently. When I bought it, it was listed as being for grades 3 - 6. When I re-downloaded, the cover page says only Grade 5. I am a third grade teacher. Is the content the same as it was before?

Hi Courtney. I am a literacy collaborative coordinator for grades 3-5. The literacy collaborative was created by Irene Fountas and Gay Sue Pinnell. I received my training from Irene and her colleagues at Lesley University in Cambridge, MA. I hope that helps:)
