Idioms are great fun and upper elementary and middle school students love them! This lesson is ideal for grades 6-9 and was created to address the following Common Core Standard:
Vocabulary Acquisition and Use: "Recognize and explain the meaning of common idioms, adages, and proverbs"
There are many idioms in the English language, and for some reason a large number of them are related in some way to the human body. These are thirty common English idioms that have a human body connection, along with their definitions. Students first study and discuss these with classmates and the teacher using the provided discussion guide. This is followed by a set of thirty context sentences where students must use the correct idiom to demonstrate mastery. Answers provided.
At the end is a list if five great extension activities to take your students further in the study of idioms.

Mark, I love this! I doubt that many students know what the idioms mean. I also like how you offer exercises for the kids to show what they learned, and, so important, how to use critical thinking skills.

I just mentioned your Human Body idioms in my blog post about Human Body systems. I love these and used your packet for weather. For weather, I made a chart in word, typed up each idiom and the answer, printed on cardstock, and then cut the cards apart. In the lesson, students had to move around the room trying to find their partner. I would love to see you add this modification to your packets (I'm sure it would take forever, but I plan to use lots of your language units next year during my word study block). Thanks!

Thanks for mentioning me in your blog post! I appreciate your comments and will consider them for the future, although since both products you mention are free items I may leave that to individual teachers themselves to work out their own enrichment or extension activities like the card stock charts.
