Kids (students) love an icky, smelly lab activity and this one is no exception!
In this lab, students will make their very own mold terrarium. No fancy lab supplies are required. You only need a glass jar, some old foods, and some water. All students have seen foods mold in their homes, but they get so excited to watch the growth and progress of the molds growing in their terrariums. It is fascinating to watch a tiny spot of mold grow into a big hairy monster!
Included in this download:
1) A 3 page handout with directions to the student as to how to set up the terrarium as well as basic facts about the fungi.
2) A 5 page worksheet for students to fill in as the lab progresses. It includes pre-lab questions, a data table for recording observations, and analysis questions to be answered at the end of the lab.
3) Teacher preparation sheet
4) Teacher Answer Key
5) Photo time line of a terrarium I set up.
All documents are included as Word documents and as pdf forms.
This activity is appropriate for science students in grades 5 - 7.
