PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Abstract: So much history has been learned from the letters and diaries that were so carefully and thoughtfully written in the past. Today, letter writing is a lost art, replaced by the cell phone and email. Lives are busy with little time to sit down and write a letter, and yet what can replace the thrill of a thick envelope filled with news from a friend or relative. This unit will explore friendly letters and business letters with the hope that students will take the time to share, in writing, their lives and their times with others.

Graphic organizers for using with the unit include the following:

I'm so glad. I was appalled just this week to find that Middle Schoolers didn't know how to address an envelope! Thank you for teaching them what is truly a pleasure to get from someone. Jeanne

You're welcome! Is there anything better than a nice, newsy letter? Hopefully we can teach kiddos to look forward to them and actually write one or two! Best of luck; hope this gave you some ideas. Jeanne

Thank you! I still think it is so sad not to be able to go to the mailbox and find a letter. How much history would be lost if so many "average" people hadn't put their ideas and feelings down on paper. Enjoy!

My students realize there is more than just texting...
On  March 14, 2012Jeanne Guthrie answered:
Thank you. I've been a bit afraid that today's students are creating their own vocabulary and means of communication; there's nothing nicer than getting a real letter!
