PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

New England Colonial Life Unit in Pictures for Special Ed., ELL and ESL Students in Pictures for Special Ed., ELL and ESL Students from the Include Me © Series U.S. History Vol. 1 (Teacher's Resource Book for Differentiated Instruction, Special Education and ELLs) by Dr. Annette Maestas and Lonnie Dai Zovi is a picture based, simple, and leveled, packet to differentiate instruction. With your good teaching, and with these worksheets to teach both the concepts, vocabulary and facts of New England Colonial Life period, all students will develop English language skills as they learn.

Often students with varying degrees of English abilities are dying to do what the rest of the students are doing, but they find the vocabulary beyond their reach. At the same time, some of the ESL or ELL may have limited basic or prior knowledge of the concepts being taught so the pictures help in this way, too. The visual learners, slower learners and special education students can benefit by this approach as well as the ESL and ELL students.

The included suggestions for peer tutoring will see the whole class included in all the students' learning. This will work well for large classes with learning centers, as well as a pull out situation. Or, if you are the demonstration/lecture/reading type teacher, when it comes to reinforcement and assessment, these sheets will also work well.

The reading and exercise levels vary from 1.5 - 3.5 (although the content is covered in 5th grades and higher). It is suggested that these be used when the on level or nearly on level student do the textbook readings and activities. This is NOT a substitute for the regular textbook or curriculum, but a resource of ready - made readings and activities that students of all levels can learn from. All students should be, and now can be, included.

Adult Ed. (G.E.D. and citizenship classes) and other teachers who have low-literacy or illiterate ESL, ELL students, should use the Include Me © Series U.S. History worksheets they can start learning with these pictures as they develop their oral and reading proficiency.

Your students are crying "Include me, include me!", so include them. Include them in the learning process with the Include Me © Series, U.S. History Vol.1 by Dr. Annette Maestas and Lonnie Dai Zovi

Thanks! This was perfect for my sped. Students. Thanks
On  August 11, 2013Lonnie Dai Zovi answered:
Exactly. I congratulate you on recognizing your challenge and addressing it. If you (or your colleagues) teach science and have IEP students, you'll be happy to know that I have life science completed and almost finished physical and earth sciences. If you are one of my followers you'll know the minute they get uploaded. Congrats for being a wise teacher!

This is going to be a huge help for my new arrival ELLs, the illustrations are perfect and this is exactly what I was hoping to find. Thank you for providing such a wonderful unit!
On  February 17, 2013Lonnie Dai Zovi answered:
You are welcome. Kids with NO background in US history need this more that others. If you teach science (or have teacher that do,) I also have units like this for life sciences and later, earth and physical.

great for differentiation! thank you!
On  January 17, 2013Lonnie Dai Zovi answered:
You are welcome. We are always told to differentiate , and we agree, but we don't always have time to create the tools to do so. As you know I have many of these Include Me© Series packets in US History, Ancient Civ, Life Sciences and soon Earth and Physical Science. I hope you will find them useful as well.

On  December 15, 2012,  Marcia B. said:
My adult-education ESL students loved these materials, which I used in a U.S. history/civics cycle aimed at preparing them for the U.S. citizenship exam. The vocabulary is presented in flashcards, crossword puzzles (at two levels of difficulty), a rebus-style picture reading and a word search. Every morning for a week we used a different part of this package. By the end, the students felt they had mastered the vocabulary. It gave them a wonderful sense of control and comprehension. Lonnie Dai Zovi is a genius!
On  December 15, 2012Lonnie Dai Zovi answered:
Thanks again for the feedback. If you still have the same students later when their English reaches the intermediate level, and you still want to reinforce Vocab, reading, AND U.S. history, you might want to look at some of my True Ghost Stories That Teach (US History and more). My intermediate mid schooler ELL and my adult learners ELLs love these.

Great content! Perfect for supporting ELLs with visuals.
On  November 15, 2012Lonnie Dai Zovi answered:
They FINALLY can understand more easily. I just had a girl crying to me that her teachers didn't care about her learning because they expected her to do the exact same thing as everyone else but they knew English AND had been to school all 9 years, where she had only 3 years of school and low English. She's not my student but I will share these packets with the other teachers and hope to gosh they use them with her. She deserves it.
