Earlier this year I was thinking about how in First Grade we typically teach spelling through rules. This is great, but I know that some of my kids were not linking this to their reading. Knowing how much they L.O.V.E. to use sticky notes, I created this mini book which I call the "Word Detective Book". Each student has a copy of it in their book box along with a pad of sticky notes. When they are reading to themselves, reading to someone, or even listening to reading on the computer, they can get out a sticky note and search for different words by spelling rule.
This is such a great idea. My kids are going to LOVE it!!

I know my students will enjoy having their own detective book and using post it notes. We play the "Pink Panther" theme song when we start word work. So, this will fit perfectly! Can't wait to use it this August. Thank you!
The word detective book covers 15 spelling rules. This includes the 5 short vowels, 5 long vowels, blends, digraphs, FLoSS words (double f,l,s at the end), ar, or and a blank page to add your own rules.
I am in my 3rd year of teaching, and I love it! I am currently teaching kindergarten, and previously taught first grade for 2 years. I have published one article and have been chosen to help write curriculum for Language Arts in my district.
