Literature circles are a great way to get kids talking about the books they read! I loved using them in 3rd and 4th grade and couldn't wait to try them with my high groups in 1st grade. So I decided to take what I had and create an easier version for my firsties. After creating them, I realized that I could have used them with my 3rd graders as well. I love that the directions and the work can be done/seen all on one page.
The following are a list of the jobs you can assign your students to do during your literature circles. You can assign a job after a short picture book from an author study or after reading a section/chapter in a chapter book. The directions are right on each job handout.
¢¯¿½¡ Artful Artist
¢¯¿½¡ Discussion Director
¢¯¿½¡ Creative Connector
¢¯¿½¡ Problem/Solution Detective
¢¯¿½¡ Setting Sketcher
¢¯¿½¡ Word Wizard
¢¯¿½¡ Selection Summarizer
¢¯¿½¡ Character Catcher
After reading a picture book and assigning a job or reading a chapter and assigning a job, you will need to meet with your group so they can share their assignment with the rest of the group. This should help focus a discussion of the reading. Everyone can have the same job or you can assign each person a different job. In the lower grades you will probably have them read one day, do the job the next and either meet right away after the job or before they do their next reading. Before getting started, you will need to model how to do each of the jobs properly.
These sheets are also great to use during stations¢¯¿½¦especially listening station, buddy reading, classroom library, etc!
**This packet has regular, big kid lines. I have another packet with primary, handwriting lines.

You MUST have the newest ADOBE Acrobat download to view my printables clearly; MAC users must have a sufficient ADOBE add-on to view my printables. Be sure to open the product up to view/print. Do not use the preview option. Hope this helps!

If you are a Mac user you will need an updated adobe. Then you need to fully open the document to print it. Do not use the preview to print. Hope that helps!

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

Grades Taught:
Subject Area:

I have been teaching since 2000. I started out in 4th grade for two years then went on to teach 3rd grade for 6 years. I have been teaching 1st grade ever since and have loved every bit of it. I believe all elementary teachers need to experience 1st grade for at least a year....there is so much learning and growing going on...it is amazing!
