Grade Level: 3-5 (adaptable for primary)

Instructional Procedure: Quilts

Rationale for instructional procedure:
Quilts are designed for students to focus on important concepts in a piece of literature including theme, symbolism, and vocabulary. Quilts also allow for students to recall their favorite passages or retell the story/idea represented in the book.

Literature:
Tar Beach by Faith Ringgold (enlarged text or multiple copies for shared reading)
The People Could Fly by Virginia Hamilton (optional extension)

Rationale for selection of literature:
Integrating multicultural children's books into the curriculum is a necessary goal for any teacher. Tar Beach is a wonderful piece of literature that exposes children to a fictional story that includes real issues concerning racial discrimination in the United States. By reading this, students will be able to confront their questions and lack of understanding relating to their own prejudices. Hamilton's The People Could Fly serves as an optional extension to the lesson plan. Although it is set in an earlier time period, it allows for children to see both similarities and differences between the characters of Cassie and Toby, as well as the stories themselves.

Materials Needed:
Beach objects (towel, sunglasses, sunscreen)
Quilt
Paper quilt template
Markers/colored pencils/crayons
Scraps of fabric/wallpaper
Scissors and Glue
