Instead of assigning chapter questions for each of the 12 LOTF chapters, this assignment requires students to reveal their understanding of the novel and explore the major ideas of the novel through weekly in-class essays. The first sheet is the handout that explains the assignment to students, the following sheets are the essay topic choices. Typically, the students are not given the choices in advance, to reduce internet research and plagiarism. These in-class essays are more effective than assigning basic content questions for each chapter because they challenge the students to think about the critical issues in LOTF, rather than focus on simply knowing "what happened".
