This complete Lyric Poetry Unit peaks student interest in the process of interpreting poetry. Using modern song lyrics, and some older lyrics, students will study poetic elements such as poem structure, rhyme scheme, figuritive language, theme, etc. In addition, students will discover lyric structure specific for songs, such as verse, chorus, and bridge. Obtain the music and share the "sound" of those structural parts and share it with the students. The unit also comes with a long-term poetry analysis writing assignment and rubric, notes pages and overheads, as well as a lyric mini-presentation project and rubric that allows students to download and interpret their own favorite lyrics. Song lyrics included in packet are "Home," by Chris Daughtry; "Ironic," by Alanis Morisette; "Mama, I'm Coming Home," by Ozzy Osbourne; "Life is a Highway," by Tom Cochrane; "Chains and Things," by B.B. King; "Give a Little Bit," by Goo Goo Dolls; and "Live Like You Were Dying," by Tim McGraw. I have also included a free collection of poetry incase you want to add to the packet. PLEASE NOTE THAT YOU MUST HAVE SOME KNOWLEDGE ABOUT TEACHING POETRY. THIS IS NOT A HOW-TO; SIMPLY A STUDENT PACKET WITH TEACHER RESOURCES. Thank you!

As a New York State teacher of 7 years, I have come to truly understand the requirements of modern-day education. Currently a high school teacher of grades 9,11, 12, I do have experience in grades 6, 7, and 8. A 1 students to 1 computer initiative in my classroom, and the use of the latest modern technology, sets the bar in my school for 21st century learning.
