This graphic organizer helps groups of students to understand how various literary devices create meaning. It's one thing for students to be able to point out dramatic irony or imagery; it's another for them to explain how that irony or imagery changes the reader's understanding of the text.
The first column lists literary elements/devices; the second column asks students to explain where that element is found in the play; the third asks them to explain what the element adds to the play. The "dramatic irony" row has been completed as an example.
I usually have students complete this chart with partners or small groups, then use the information from the chart to complete a writing assignment.
