This activity uses a high interest nonfiction article with permission from Highlights Children, Inc. There are various levels of the graphic organizer included to help students understand how main ideas and details are related and that NOT ALL MAIN IDEAS CAN BE FOUND IN THE ARTICLE (huge misconception with many teachers). I've used this article for years and the easiest way to teach main idea and detail is to tell your students that you can see or draw a detail - but not a main idea. Ideas are abstract and can only be generated when like details show the reader the main idea. When reading an article, for example, the author will include ALL of the details but not all (and sometimes no) main ideas in the text.
Main Idea = The Topic + What the author tells us about the topic
So no more "looking" for the main idea. It's time to generate those main ideas people...
