One way I encourge students to love reading and take care of books is by making individual book bags.
I purchase the small cloth bags from Oriental Trading Company. They are large enough to fit a few chapter books at one time. You can even fit small picture books in the book bag. They have handles and come in different colors.
Early in the school year we talk about how special books are and how we need to take care of them. To do that we will make book bags to use for the year and to keep when the year is over.
In addition to the bags, you will need fabric paint and a permanent marker to write each students name on the bag.
I hope you enjoy this activity as much as I do each September.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE
I have been teaching for 18 years now. I started out in 2nd grade, moved to 5th, 4th and now I have been in 3rd grade for 8 years. I have been lucky to work with many different teacher who have been in different places in their careers. I have learned so much from each and every one of them. During my 18 years I have co-taught with 5 different special education teachers. I love when other teachers work in my classroom. It opens my eyes up to new/different strategies/styles.
