This is a collection of 11 Making Words worksheets that can be used as independent center activities. Students cut out the letter cards along the right hand side of the worksheet and use the letters as manipulatives to create a word based on a given clue. Once the students have determined the answer to the clue and have formed the words using the letter cards, they are to write the word on the lines provided on the worksheet. They are then instructed to change the word in a specific way to form a new word. Each worksheet contains 10 to 13 clues.
This collection also includes an answer key/word list, which can be used as a spelling or vocabulary list. Words within each worksheet all follow a pattern or work on a specific skill, such as long vowel patterns or adding suffixes. Patterns include: final -st blend, short e, long e (ee/ea), mixed long/short e, short i, sounds of o (oa,oi, oo), initial s- blends and clusters, sounds of oo, long ar/or, doubling final consonant when adding -ed or -ing, and silent e. The worksheets can be used as spelling practice, homework, or independent center activities. They have been completed successfully by students with special needs. Rebecca Bettis, 2008.
