Making Words is a great activity for students to explore phonics patterns and manipulating words. This file contains 44 different words. There are 4 words for each month (June and July are combined) that go with common themes found in that month (ornament for December and mittens for January). There is an answer key for each word that provides a list of possible words students might come up with (these lists are not all inclusive). The last page provides a blank form, so you can make your own Making Words activity.
Making Words can be used as a whole group, small group or independent activity.

Some first graders might have a hard time using this as independent work, but this might work well as a small group activity or for a time when you have a volunteer/aide available to assist. I've also used it as a whole group activity. I hope you can find a way to use the activity!
