This Writing Rubric has been adapted from the six traits of writing. Three of those six traits are included for use in grading a math problem of the week or other technical writing assignment, and I have condensed it into a 1/2 page rubric. The traits I have included are 1) Ideas and Content, 2) Organization, and 3) Conventions). I made the "Ideas and Content" section worth double the weight, because in my opinion, that is the most important part of technical, mathematical, or scientific writing. I have also included a point-value for the correct solution as well as for showing the work leading up to the answer. The rubric grades on a 24 point-scale (4 points for each section and 8 points for the Ideas and Content section).
The cover page also gives a detailed description of how to effectively grade using this rubric, as well as tips to improve student writing. This is intended to be used in conjunction with a math or science writing prompt such that the student is asked to show work, arrive at a solution, and then explain their method in one or more paragraphs. Great rubric for Math Problem of the Week!
This rubric is great in conjunction with my "Math Problem of the Week Sample Work and Written Response." You can find this on my seller's page.
