Math Camp-In is an exciting way to bring mathematics to your classroom or building!

During a Math Camp-In students hike to math "trail posts" (stations), complete rich mathematical tasks and record ideas in their Camp Journal. You can use Math Camp-In as a day-long program, a mini-unit in the regular classroom, or as a Family Math Night.

The download includes the full version of the Educator Trail Guide, student journal that can be copied for each camper, badges for each trail post station that are given when students complete the problem, and other printable materials you will need.

Trail Post Stations include: Camp Scene; Pattern Block Pictures, The Great Bug Jump, Trail Mix Math, Big Bugs, We Want S'more Math!, Crack the Code, Bubble Tents, and Lights Out!

Hi! I came to your workshop at the NCTM conference, and I remember doing a get-to-know you cup pyramid activity. Is this activity included in the second grade packet?

Lisa,
Thanks for the question. The Pitch the Tent activity isn't in the download, but I can send you the info we use. If you want to email me it is kshrewsberry@teachinglearningcollaborative.org

Basically, each group needs 6 cups (labeled 1-6) and a bungee cord. They have to stack the cups in a 3-2-1 pyramid so that the sum of each row (bottom and middle) and the diagonals are 10.

I like this packet a lot, only thing is there is not a lot of info for making name badges and I also can't locate the stickers for the story word problem (Trail Post 1)

Heidi,
There are a couple of different options. You can have students create a name badge using a blank label and having them decorate it and put their camp name on it. There are also some neat name badge holders (we use a camp themed one) from Oriental Trading Co (orientaltrading.com) but you would have to buy those. The other idea is to have them create a name badge using heavier paper and yarn, and they can put their name on it as well and turn it into a necklace. The stickers were also on Oriental Trading Co., but students can draw a scene on their camp journal, and create a word problem that way. Hope that helps. There should have been a page in the info that gave where we got some of the materials (name badges/stickers); and alternative ideas. I'll double check to see if it loaded--we did this recently, and maybe we thought the old had been replaced with the new--and need to do it again. Thanks for the question--hope that helps.
