This read-and-retell activity was designed to help students practice the mathematical language for the operations, symbols, and answers found in math problems.
Students read a short reading about the mathematical operations, symbols, and results of operations. Students write the bold vocabulary words on the right-hand side of the page, then fold the page over and retell what they read to a partner using the vocabulary words. Finally, students re-read the story and summarize it using the same vocabulary words again. This requires students to read, write, listen to and speak the vocabulary words, all in one activity.
Also included is a vocabulary sort to help students extend their knowledge of these words by classifying them based on their relationships.
Originally developed for my 4th grade ESOL, this activity could be useful to help practice the basic math vocabulary for mainstream and ESL students in grades 3-8.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE
Subject Area:
Before coming to Maryland, where I currently teach grades K-5, focusing mostly on 2nd and 4th, I was in North Carolina teaching ESL Language Arts primarily to grades 6-8. While working on my MS in ESL Education at the University of Tennessee, I did student teaching with grades K-8 in Sevierville, TN. I have also been invited to Busan, S. Korea, twice to conduct 2 week teacher training seminars on Content Based English Instruction for English language learners, and I am SIOP trained as well. In addition to my MS, I also have a degree in Spanish and Mass Communications.
