MATH in ACTION Welcome to our favorite Italian Restaurant. Far more interesting than word problems in your text, students can identify with this simulation activity. This is a real-life use of math.
Materials include a RESTAURANT MENU, 12 CUSTOMER CHECKS with items ordered and the amount tendered by the customer (separate answer sheets are also provided)
Acting as servers, students are required to read and interpret the menu, determine the cost of items, find the total cost and then compute and add the sales tax for a Grand Total. Since this restaurant accepts ONLY CASH, they will also have to determine how much change the customer receives.
Blank customer checks have been included so that students or teachers can create their own customer orders.
This activity is great for reinforcing working with percentages and rounding numbers. In addition, the students improve reading skills when scanning the menu and interpreting data.
