Handout includes a 50-question short-answer test. Most questions may be answered in 1-3 words. Because the questions are listed in the same order as they appear in the book, its a great assessment to determine if students actually read the book instead of reading plot summaries, watching movies, getting information from other students, etc. After grading the test, it will be obvious if students read only part of the book, if they skimmed the book, or if they read the book thoroughly. If you want to determine if a student actually read a book, this type of assessment is much more effective than a multiple-choice test where students can guess answers or an essay test where good writers can often bluff their way through the topics. The download includes the test, answer sheet, and answer key.

I worked in schools either as a middle school teacher, high school teacher, or administrator for over thirty years. Most of my experience has been in high school English classrooms. I have taught everything from ninth-grade literature to students with major reading problems all the way to AP English Language and Composition teacher. Although I love teaching, I retired at the end of the 2009-2010 school year when over 500 teachers in my district lost their jobs because of the bad economy. I'm praying that the economy will improve and I will be able to find another teaching job in high school or college in the future.
